ParadeATW.com: Curving Her Way To The Top: Interview With Maria DeMartino By Shane Fontane Editor-In-Chief Photo courtesy of: SelectGlamour.com After Maria DeMartino's visit to Las Vegas where she worked on her latest project for American Curves Magazine, Ocean County NJ's very own hometown girl took a moment to chat with us about modeling and nightlife culture. Parade ATW: When did you get into modeling? Maria DeMartino: My first job was in the mid 90's as an extra for a video called The Firm. I stopped perusing modeling for a while and one day I read FHM Magazine and decided to send my pics in. Well, a section editor called me back in a week. He told me he wanted me to do a completely different section of the magazine and then they changed their mind and put me in the "From the Bosses Desk" section. After that magazine came out I started getting a bunch of calls from people to do various different projects. Since then I have just been accumulating different projects.
Q: Parade ATW: Maria DeMartino and NJ nightlife just go so well together. What has guided you in this current direction of modeling and promotions?
ParadeATW.com: Parade ATW: Maria DeMartino and NJ nightlife just go so well together. What has guided you in this current direction of modeling and promotions? Maria DeMartino: (1) I used to work for Merge Night Club in Seaside NJ doing winter promotions when my husband used to DJ there. Then I did the door in the summer so that played a big part in getting to know the people in the industry and becoming friends with them. (2) At the same time that I had the issue of FHM coming out I was also going to be the first EventVibe Diva for the East Coast. Joe Levy helped promote that as well as the FHM issue. (3) I would say the David from Club Abyss in Sayreville NJ had asked me to do an appearance for them when the FHM issue came out. Of course I said yes. Not only because I was a big supporter of Deko Lounge, but also because the owners had always been so good to me. Now, I actually am very good friends with Demitri (Club Abyss/Deko Lounge) and he actually let me use Abyss for a shoot. From there it kind of just kept going from project to project and meeting new people who wanted to work with me.
Q: Parade ATW: What do you enjoy most about the modeling industry?
ParadeATW.com: Maria DeMartino: Meeting different people and going to different places while making connections you never knew you could. It's realizing that its hard work but the effort is so worth it. It's also about looking at the end result and thinking how you can improve for the next shoot.
Q: Parade ATW:Can you explain to our readers what a typical shoot is like?
ParadeATW.com: Maria DeMartino: Usually you get there and talk to the photographer about what looks we are going for, what areas we will be shooting and then you go to the stylist who changes you into a million different out fits until they find something funky or sexy looking. This s then followed by the make up ad hair person, which usually takes an hour. Then, the photographer test his lights and so forth and we start to shoot. So sometimes you will be there a good 2/12 to 3 hours before we even start shooting. Other occasions they don't want any make up on you (I hate those shoots) because when you are shooting for hours your facial expressions start to show that you are tired. It's hard to keep smiling or giving them the look that they want. I would definitely say that's the hardest thing to keep going - the facial expressions and also having to hold the same positions for long periods of time. There are two ways photographers shoot. Either you do your own positions or little movements or they position you exactly to get the shot they are looking for. You usually get done, say good bye to everyone, get peoples cards that you have worked with all day and wait to see the pics. This is usually about a week until you can see them.
Q: Parade ATW: How has modeling impacted your personal life?
ParadeATW.com: Maria DeMartino: Well I live in a small town so when the first FHM pics came out it was like a game of telephone. People said I was naked in there and of course I was not naked (maybe half naked, but not naked). So they looked at it in a negative way. I am totally comfortable with my body so even if I were naked I wouldn't care who saw me. Now things have mellowed out and it's not such a big shock for my friends, family and my tanning salon customers to see me in a picture with lingerie or a bikini because they are use to it now.
Q: Parade ATW: How does the public's perception of a model differ from the reality of a model?
ParadeATW.com: Maria DeMartino: Mostly they think it's easy work. Which is far from true. Modeling consists of long days and hours of prep time for a shoot. For example, I just shot in the Vegas sun, 102 degrees outside for five hours. The air was so dry I thought my lung turned into a prune. There are also some things that are a reality. It is exciting to see your work out there and it's fun to travel to different places. .
Q: Parade ATW: Are there any particular photographers, stylists, make-up artists, etc that you would like to work with?
ParadeATW.com: Maria DeMartino: I loved working with Eric Fisher and James Weber. There is one photographer in Chicago, Rich Markese that I am trying to work with but I have to get to Chicago one day to do that. He does great work.
Q: Parade ATW: Is there anyone you would like to thank for his or her support?
ParadeATW.com: Maria DeMartino: Petey and Jason of Merge Night Club. Demitri and Kosta of Club Abyss and Deko Lounge. Serge(everyone in NJ knows Serge). Joe Levy from EventVibe.com. Nick Andreatolla from Clique Entertainment. WRAT Radio for your support of an Ocean County girl like me. Mike Esterman of (my agent...from Esterman.com). Adam Winer from FHM(for giving me a chance). The great Shane Fontane from Parade ATW. Victor Soto. James Weber. Eric Fisher. My first manager JT. Zeb Atlas(my best buddy). My husband Mark DeMartino(who matters the most) for taking me to all the crazy places that I have to go.
